Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World
Sunday September 15, 9a-5pm

Are you wondering how to stay grounded and centered and respond to the current political and cultural context? Contemplative practices such as yoga and meditation can serve as points of refuge when we feel lost, hopeless and uncertain. Skill in Action, a practice that bridges yoga and justice, will lead you through a transformative two-day workshop focused on contemplative practice, justice and healing. Skill in Action provides experiential embodied activities to wade through emotions, learn our history and challenge the urge to remain complacent. If you are a yogi, healer, or social change agent this workshop is designed for you.

White supremacy’s most effective tool is Divide and Conquer, which causes us to distance from ourselves and others, leaving us split apart both individually and collectively. Dismantling white supremacy requires turning and facing one another. Through the practice of yoga, we can experience a personal transformation that allows us to approach one another with honesty, skill and awareness. In this workshop, we will deepen our understanding of the principles of justice and of yoga, the workings of power and privilege, oppression and identity, suffering and liberation, and loving kindness. In addition, we will discuss what we internalize from living in a white supremacist culture and how these internalizations impact us individually, as people of color, as white people, and as a collective.

We will practice asana (postures), meditation, mindfulness, pranayama (breathing), chanting and mantra work as you sharpen goals and visions for your work to change the world. You will also create concrete plans to put your goals into action.

This all-levels yoga workshop will include a dharma talk, meditation, asana, and discussion. You will have an hour-long lunch break on Saturday and Sunday.

*Note: You are encouraged to sign up for the entire weekend at a discounted price. If you only attend Sunday’s workshop we ask that you have some understanding of how personal, institutional and cultural racism operate.

To make these workshops accessible, we have a three-tiered payment scale.

Skill in Action Dismantling Racism Workshop

Sunday, February 10, 2019 10:00am-1:30pm

Key West Yoga Sanctuary

Personal and collective transformation happens in spiritual spaces and activists circles. Embodied practice is necessary in activist spaces to help us sustain our movement work. Activism is necessary in spiritual spaces because we aren't isolated in our spiritual practice and there is no way to separate from the chaos dominant culture created via white supremacy, oppression and power.

In this workshop, we will deepen our understanding of the principles of justice, activism and of contemplative practice. We will discuss the workings of power and privilege, oppression and identity, suffering and liberation, and loving kindness. In addition, we will discuss what we internalize from living in a white supremacist culture and how these internalizations impact us individually, as people of color, as white people, and as a collective. We will practice movement, meditation, mindfulness, pranayama (breathing) as you sharpen goals and visions for your work to change the world. You will also create concrete plans to put your goals into action.

This inclusive, all-levels workshop is designed for anyone who wants to understand how to link the practices of inner and outer change in service of our individual and collective liberation.

Michelle C. Johnson, Founder of Skill in Action: Yoga & Social Justice and Kerri Kelly, Founder of CTZNWELL, have teamed up once again an informative and transformative workshop. Friends, these are dark times that require an even deeper dive into understanding how we got to where we are and what skillful actions we can take in response. No one can escape the effects of white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism. It is time for us, all of us, to be part of creating a just world. Michelle and Kerri will explore the intersection of contemplative practices (mindfulness, movement and yoga) and justice. They will discuss spiritual bypassing to deepen your understanding of how you/we can engage with spiritual practice to respond to the cultural context. Michelle and Kerri will share organizing principles as they inspire you to take action. The session will include: a dharma talk, discussion, meditation, partner and group work, movement, and breath work. We will guide you. Now is the time. Join us.

Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a water bottle and yoga mat if you have one. We will have props and mats in the space. We will take a lunch break around 12:30pm. You are more than welcome to bring your own lunch or to go to a place nearby to nourish your body and spirit.

The Joy of Activism

The Joy of Activism with Michelle and Cheryl

Join Michelle C. Johnson and Cheryl Schirillo for The Joy of Activism featuring meditation, music and movement on the 2nd Friday of each month from 7:30 – 8:45 am at 18 Springs (detailed directions and parking info below).

Michelle and Cheryl have teamed up for this new offering because they believe that their strength and tenacity as activists grows from their ability to regularly plug into joy and deep self-care. So often social change movements are a response to the toxicity present in our society, especially oppressive, cultural norms and the abuse of power and privilege. They feel it is helpful for activists to work in partnership with Nature, create and connect with joy and light, and to make space to rejuvenate so we may continue doing our social change work in the world. This monthly event will include metta meditation, music, intention setting and visioning, art and movement. There is no set fee for this offering, but heart donations of $5-$20 are appropriate and appreciated.

18 Springs Community Healing Center is located across from Wake Forest University and next to the BB&T Center. The address is: 2424 Reynolda Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Enter into the parking lot off Reynolda Rd. Skill in Action Dharma and Karma Workshop
July 27, 1:30-3pm

Karma, a term used very often in and outside of yoga spaces means the sum or our experiences and actions in deciding our fate or destiny. Dharma is our duty or higher purpose, and calls us to take action in co-creating our destiny with the universe. This inspiring yoga journey will explore our actions and reactions, not only individually but collectively and help us harness our power so that we may take action and create social change. Through the practice of yoga, pranayama, and meditation we will connect with our inner fire, agni, to gain clarity about our actions and their alignment with our higher purpose all in service of our collective humanity. You will leave this class with a deeper connection to self, your community and all beings.

Radical Self Care Workshops
July 28, 1:30-3pm

In yoga, the "self" truly is a reflection of everyone that we interact with; there is no separation and we are inextricably linked. The current cultural context is one that is greatly imbalanced, causing dysfunction, separation, isolation, trauma and harm individually and collectively. Self-Care is a radical act of resistance. It is time for us to consider how we want to more intentionally care for ourselves and others. Through the practice of yoga, this workshop will focus on the relationship that you have with yourself and how that informs your relationships with others. In this workshop we will explore what it means to make space to practice self-care and what it means to care for the collective good. We will set intentions focused on living into the highest versions of ourselves, and make space to heal our hearts so that we can more clearly see our connection with others.

Immersion: Radical, Responsive and Ready! Creating a Just World Through The Practice of Yoga
July 26, 9am-4pm

During the Asheville Yoga Festival in 2017, we began a discussion about the external cultural and political landscape and its intersection with the practice of yoga. Friends, these are dark times that require an even deeper dive into understanding how we got to where we are and what skillful actions we can take in response. No one can escape the effects of white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism. It is time that yogis mindfully and actively engage in creating justice through the practice of yoga. Radical, Responsive and Ready will inspire you to change. Four yoga practitioners, Kerri Kelly, Chelsea Roberts Jackson, Carrington Jackson and Michelle will engage you in an exploration of the intersection of yoga and social justice. The session will include: a dharma talk, meditation, partner and group work, asana, and breath work. This moment is about you asking yourself to commit to creating a just world through your practice of yoga. We will guide you. Now is the time. Join us.

Weekend Intensive
